Injury Prevention Learning Collaborative

Injuries continue to be the leading cause of death and disability for Ohio children. In 2006, unintentional injuries were the fifth-leading cause of death for Ohioans of all ages, and the leading cause of death for Ohioans ages 1-44 years (http://injuryresearch.net/OhioInjuries.aspx). According to the Ohio Trauma Registry and Ohio Department of Health data, an average of 266 Ohio children aged birth to 14 years-old die from injuries annually. In addition, 3,274 are admitted to hospitals, and 166,032 are treated in Emergency Departments (EDs) for injuries. Among children in this age group, motor vehicle traffic injuries remain the leading cause of injury-related death, and falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalization and ED visits. Injuries caused by drowning/submersion or firearms had the highest case fatality rate of 32.5 per 100 patients and 28.2 per 100 patients respectively. Between 2005-2007, injured Ohioans spent more than 687,000 days in the hospital, and accrued over $3.3 billion in hospital charges per year.

The Injury Prevention Learning Collaborative will achieve best clinicalcare and health outcomes for participating children ages birth -1 year old by using a developmentally appropriate and targeted screening tool. Primary care providers will determine and document injury risk within families and provide targeted advice and guidance at all well child visits 90% of the time during the nine-month learning collaborative.

The Injury Prevention Team is in the process of updating and revising the project. If you are interested in participating in Wave 2 of this MOC project, please contact Sean O’Hanlon at the Ohio AAP by email, sohanlon@ohioaap.org or by phone, (614) 846-6258. Wave 2 of the project will start in Fall 2013.
